9.00 pm — Screenings
La Dame de Pique (1986 – 16 mm, 23 min, black and white, silent, fiction)
Directed by Patricia Plattner, this film portrays a Russian prince exiled on the shores of Lake Geneva, living in nostalgia for a lost country and a bygone era. Now poor and alone, he gradually parts with his family possessions through dealings with an obsequious and aesthetically minded antique dealer. With the prince’s death, a world collapses — not necessarily the one we expect.
Hôtel Abyssinie (1996 – 35 mm, blow-up, 60 min, colour, original version with French subtitles, documentary)
This documentary gives voice to elderly Italians whose lives were shaped by their deployment to Abyssinia during the Fascist era and the Italian colonial war. Despite defeat, they chose to settle there. Through their testimonies, particularly that of Amadeo V., the reasons behind this singular exile emerge, along with the portrait of a little-known African country.
Screenings on the first floor of the Maison St-Gervais. Free admission, subject to availability.
