Exhibitions 1976–2001. Retrospective
Bertrand Lavier (1949, Châtillon-sur-Seine) has developed several series of works which he refers to as “chantiers” or building sites. His approach involves reintroducing historic gestures of art, whether that consists of choosing a readymade, adding a pictorial touch, or using appropriation. One of his projects consisted of combining two everyday furnishings (like a safe and a refrigerator) according to formal criteria; in another, he repainted items with thick “Van Gogh” brushwork; in yet another he placed ordinary items on pedestals; or created life-size modern artworks taken from Mickey Mouse comics; made paintings in two different colors with the same name that were not identical; cut out physical objects so that they fit into the frame with which they were photographed. The Lavier retrospective on the fourth floor recalled these varied series with over fifty pieces.
