With nearly 30 works taking up the entire fourth floor, First Spaceship on Venus outlined the state of Sylvie Fleury’s (1961, Geneva) art. It took place six years after her first exhibition at the Galerie Rivolta in Lausanne, where she had presented her soon-to-be-famous Shopping Bags. Sylvie Fleury has continually expanded on her work at the nexus of the art and fashion worlds. She revisits Modernist icons by pairing them with luxury goods or specialized “subcultures,” like New Age. By coupling the works she is stripping them of their original context and projecting them into a category where the value of an object is not linked to the meaning it produces, but to the consumption it provokes. In this way, her lipstick-colored First Spaceships on Venus playing “girl group” rock worked in tandem with the sculptures, videos, silkscreens, and murals in the exhibition to produce colliding fantasies.
