This exhibition of some thirty drawings was part of a larger project that depicted the German art scene of the 1980s, a project that would reach its zenith with the Martin Kippenberger retrospective in 1997. Albert Oehlen (1954, Krefeld) was a close friend of Kippenberger; the two artists had shared an apartment for two years in Spain. A product of the 1970s alternative punk culture and leftist movements, Oehlen shared his colleague’s commitment to being an agitator, but limited his involvement to painting and drawing. He questioned the requirements for a “good” painting by incorporating miscellaneous objects into his work, testing the precarious balance between unfinished and overworked art, and by eliminating any trace of hierarchy.
